I’ve always had difficulties with color…not to say I don’t use it, nor use it well. But it’s always been a detail in my own artwork that I’ve had to consciously push…otherwise, I end up with end-products that are always just in red, black, and white.
Now both in teaching students and talking to clients, I find myself trying to explain how important it is to put some thought into using more color in a project. Check out this info-graphic that demonstrates how colors affect shopping purchases (Kissmetrics)
Here’s a cool collection of 40 photoshop lighting effects that I had bookmarked for a few months intending to post at some point. While I’ve been quite eager to use one or two of these techniques at some point in time, I haven’t really found any commercial uses for them….yet. But they’re really easy ways to elicit some “Ooohs” and “Aaahs” from random viewers. (via Vandelay Design)
I stumbled across yet another list of inspirational work….this one comprised of video game artwork. I just know SOME of my students are into gaming like I am maybe?
Most of them are really good. From what I can tell, with the exception of a couple of them, it looks to me like none of these are done with CGI…. so they’re most likely great examples of Photoshop and Illustration work. Or possibly some mixed-media?
This sketch work/scribble caught my attention the other day. At first glance it truly looks like just a bunch of random doodling (which is cool enough it its own right) but once you see the process, there was an amazing amount of detail, time, and attention put into this thing. And all done with Photoshop none-the-less. (OwaikeO via Abduzeedo)
Now in the midst of chaos going on in my life right now, I’m ever more in need of inspiration…not just for work, but just the spark to want to get up each morning to deal with the new day’s challenges. I know, that sounds bleak right? Well, I do what I can to keep going I guess….I have to!
Anyway, I revisited an old post I made a couple years back and stumbled across this creative little festival trailer made by this group Strukt. Extra little trivia I liked was that it was all shot using a Canon 7D.
Here’s a collection of some great design rules that should be considered when doing web-design. But a few of these are good rules for any artwork in general. A few of these we’re even going to cover in class… (via 3.7 Designs)
What’s a guy to do at the hospital when he’s not trying to calm a scared child, soothe a protective mom, apologize to insulted doctors, dodge attending nurses, explain to anxious grandparents, and direct visiting guests?
Why he’s admiring the hospital’s logo that’s all. I haven’t found out who designed this logo yet, but it’s been one of my local favorites for a few years now. Beautifully done in my opinion…I like how the artist treated the clear Hawaiian features of this family with such grace.
So here’s another fun typeface infographic that I stumbled across this morning. Remember the Periodic Table one a few months back?
These are done with a bit of fun and facetiousness of course, but I like infographics like these because not only might they demonstrate fonts you haven’t consider using before, they also suggest fonts you kinda want to avoid because everyone’s poking fun at it. (Scribble via Gizmodo)
OK, in the world of cool business card ideas, here’s one that’s definitely jumped a few notches up my list. Apparently Tamiya, the company that does those cool modeling sets, has a business card that you can actually pull apart and build with it. Racecar, airplane, boats, etc.
Only problem is that once people pull apart your card, I think your contact information is lost. But oh the fun I’d have with this! (via GeekOSystem)
Every week I get in front of a small group of business professionals and I try to clarify what Graphic Design is and what it isn’t. I stumbled across this nice selection of 20 Witty & Creative Posters about Graphic Design. Some of them do a pretty good job of expressing the point. (via Best Design Options)
