I’ve been stupid and overloaded my project load a little bit this week. As a result I will be on radio-silence for the next few days — avoid answering the phones and limit my meetings. If you call, please leave a message and I’ll return them as soon as I can. Same goes for email… as hard as it is for me to resist the little “dong” sound I hear when I get a new message, I’m going to have to ignore it a little bit.
I stumbled across this site today, aptly named “The Daily Figure” where this artist posts… err….a daily figure each day. Pretty nice…it certainly reminds me of the early gestural drawings we had to practice in art classes. If you’ve never taken an art class before…gestural art is the practice of just using lines and quick strokes to capture the motion of the object you’re drawing. Often we were told not to look at our paper but just concentrate on the figure and just let our pencils do the work.
Anyway, these figures are beautiful. Especially if he’s just doing it straight up without any reference models. I envy folks who can do body poses and expressions, it’s always been my area of weakness.
This gestural drawing exercise wasn’t half as hard when you were a young college student staring at a nude lady in class. Trust me.
Here’s another example of a digital illustrator’s workflow from sketch to the final work. What’s particularly good timing for this article is that we’re doing the exact same exercise in the Art 112 class I’m teaching.
Class! Pay attention!!!! Mmmkay? (via: WebDesignerWall)
Anybody want the full Adobe CS4 Master Collection for free? (Valued at $3500).
Sheeeit, I do! Come on…the master collection has every program you’ll ever need to do just about anything.
A friend of mine pointed me out to a blog written by an Adobe insider who made this little competition where he hid a package at some mystery location. Anyone who finds it gets the software. Sounds like he’s going to do this at every location he travels.
Kinda neat but I know I probably wouldn’t have the guts to try it unless I knew for sure it was just buried right around the corner from me. Knowing there are far smarter people out there on the internet, I just know I’d be the one who’d spend a day getting to the location only to find a hole.
That’s the sound of me coming up for air.
Life is slowly getting settled down with the new arrival to our family. Today we took little Kingston over to his first doctor’s visit. Mom went ahead to her own doctor’s appointment, so dad was left all alone with the little pooper. As it just so happens, Kingston decided to give his dad a surprise present in his diaper…and he was still “giving” just as I pulled open the diaper too! Thanks a lot kid. Gung Hey Fat Choy to you too!
My wife is already sitting in the labor ward. What am I doing still typing out a post? Hey, I’m dedicated to you guys…my silent friends, students, and clients!
Believe me, I’m panicing on the inside. I’ve been busy already making quick phone calls and informing whoever I can.
SO…. please forgive me if I cannot respond to you today. If you need to contact me, please leave a message at any of my contact spots. 808-781-9529.
Sorry Art 112 Class…. I’ll see you next week. Practice the illustrator. Download those files off my site for today and see what you can figure out, we’ll tackle them next class!
The graphic artist Shepard Fairey that I brought up a few months back was on Colbert Nation. Nice! Young guy! (Hmm..that didn’t sound right). I mean, it’s nice that graphic artists can be successful without being ancient or dead.
I don’t understand a word this site is saying (it’s all in Czech), nor did I figure out what it’s trying to do. But nonetheless, it’s still in impressive job in illustration and a very creative way of presenting content on the web. Check it out.
Once in a while I get overwhelmed…maybe I get hit with headaches, the work commitments I have pile up, I got stacks of stuff on my desk. I get this feeling where I feel like giving up my business and have an “easier” life working for someone else in an actual job.
And then I think, “WTF, why would I want to do that?! UGH!”
Yeah I don’t think I want to go back to a jobby job just yet unless the economy was in so dire straights my business just can’t keep us alive. And then, would there even be jobs for me? I don’t know about this year!
In any case, I’m doing fine…I’m overwhelmed because I have a lot of work! How many people can say that during this dismal economy! I better not complain!
I just have to take stock. Let’s see:
