{"id":1169,"date":"2008-12-23T13:06:01","date_gmt":"2008-12-23T23:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/?p=1169"},"modified":"2008-12-23T13:13:15","modified_gmt":"2008-12-23T23:13:15","slug":"picking-colors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/picking-colors\/","title":{"rendered":"Picking Colors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My best friend asked me the other day, &#8220;<em>How do you pick good colors?<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 Beyond the shock I got trying to grasp the idea that my buddy was trying to design something (he always says he can&#8217;t design), I got to thinking to myself, &#8220;<em>hmm, how DO I pick good colors for my projects?<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t have a good answer for him. I had color theory in school&#8230;but honestly, how much of that I really retained is another matter.\u00a0 In practice, what I really do to find colors for my various projects is a sometimes a mix of trial-and-error &amp; plain good luck.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here I thought I&#8217;d give you examples of what you can try doing to get colors to use for your projects. Keep in mind, colors that might be suitable for a web project might not always be effective in print, but you can use these quick tips as a way to start.\u00a0 Remember there&#8217;s a whole HUGE practice in color theory (enough to write books about and take a whole years worth of class on) but I&#8217;m not going to get into that.\u00a0 This is just quick real-world tips I&#8217;ve found useful.<\/p>\n<h2>Online Tools<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/colorwiz_screen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1170\" title=\"colorwiz_screen\" src=\"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/colorwiz_screen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/colorwiz_screen.jpg 500w, https:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/colorwiz_screen-283x300.jpg 283w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are some online tools I&#8217;ve found useful from time to time to help me develop color schemes. You know, these tools are often hit-and-miss. What I usually do is decide on one color I really want to use for a project and then I&#8217;d jump on some of these tools to try finding colors that would complement that.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colorblender.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ColorBlender<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colorsontheweb.com\/colorwheel.asp\" target=\"_blank\">ColorWheel<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colorsontheweb.com\/colorwizard.asp\" target=\"_blank\">ColorWizard<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a great site called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avivadirectory.com\/color\/\" target=\"_blank\">AVIVAdirectory<\/a> that has a whole list of tools you can try using.<\/p>\n<h2>Sample from Images<\/h2>\n<p>Another method I might use in order to make a color scheme that fits the project is to see what images I might get from my client and then I&#8217;d sample colors from that.\u00a0 Other time I might take work from an artist that inspires me and sample colors from them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/picasso_example.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1172\" title=\"picasso_example\" src=\"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/picasso_example.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/picasso_example.jpg 500w, https:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/picasso_example-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Take this Picasso image for example.\u00a0 He&#8217;s been my favorite artist for a while now. Despite the fact that my dad says he turned into a &#8220;dirty old man&#8221; in his older years, I think he&#8217;s one of the best artists when it came to color handling.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s say I sampled colors from the image above I&#8217;d get:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/picasso_scheme.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1173\" title=\"picasso_scheme\" src=\"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/picasso_scheme.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"47\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not to shabby eh?\u00a0 If it&#8217;s good enough for Picasso&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I might an image and change the hue<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/picasso_hue.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1174\" title=\"picasso_hue\" src=\"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/picasso_hue.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/picasso_hue.jpg 500w, https:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/picasso_hue-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can get a whole new range of color combinations simply by adjusting the hues. The beauty about this is that they&#8217;ll still go together because they&#8217;re derived from the same source.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I might take 2 different images and overlay them together in Photoshop so that other colors might turn up.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a good way to get random colors, but at the same time it&#8217;s not really random because you&#8217;re mixing known sources together.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve collected certain textural or color images over the years where I know they&#8217;re particularly effective in generating new color patterns for me.<\/p>\n<h2>Tip<\/h2>\n<p>Overall I told my buddy this quick tip &#8212; Use a bunch of colors that are within the same family (warm colors, cool colors) and then pick one color to act as your primary color&#8230;something that you&#8217;d use to call attention.\u00a0 Like in a website you might use one stand-out color to act as your menu or link color.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/samplecolors.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1179\" title=\"samplecolors\" src=\"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/samplecolors.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"42\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Something like this for example where you get a few similar colors together and then you&#8217;d use the darker tone to work around the design as the primary focus.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a site where users have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colorschemer.com\/schemes\/?sort=downloads\" target=\"_blank\">submitted color schemes<\/a> they&#8217;ve used.<\/p>\n<p>Good luck in finding your own project colors.
