{"id":677,"date":"2008-09-15T18:17:48","date_gmt":"2008-09-16T04:17:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/?p=677"},"modified":"2008-09-15T21:16:13","modified_gmt":"2008-09-16T07:16:13","slug":"4-months-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/raphaellowe.com\/portal\/4-months-in\/","title":{"rendered":"4 weeks in&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;m into my 4th week of lecturing so far for this Art class.\u00a0 How am I doing?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not so sure, in some cases I can see my students responding well and it boosts my confidence, while for some students I&#8217;m having some difficulty breaking through and it just throws me off.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m certainly learning some things so far though, like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Students will see through your bullshit.<\/em> If you don&#8217;t know something, I think it&#8217;s better to say you &#8220;don&#8217;t know&#8221; rather then pretend like you do.<\/li>\n<li><em>Morning is a bitch.<\/em> I teach an 8am class&#8230;which actually starts around 6am for me as I have to drop my wife off to work.\u00a0 Not only am I freaking tired when the class starts, I see a lot of blank faces staring back at me with bloodshot eyes and yawns.\u00a0 I can only assume this will get harder as the days go by and sunrise gets later and later.<\/li>\n<li>Other instructors have warned me ahead of time that I&#8217;ll be hearing <em>every excuse in the book.<\/em> I guess no longer do students use the,<em> &#8220;my dog ate my paper&#8221;<\/em> routine.\u00a0 Today it comes in the form of &#8220;<em>my software didn&#8217;t load up&#8221;<\/em>, or <em>&#8220;my computer got a virus so I couldn&#8217;t do it&#8221;<\/em>.\u00a0 Faaancy pants.\u00a0 *grandpa voice* <em>&#8220;In my day, our computers ran on tape drives and my printer was loud enough my neighbors heard it across the street&#8230;yet I STILL did my work!&#8221;<\/em> *end grandpa voice*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I looked up some information about how to keep the lecturers more interesting and keep the students awake.\u00a0 Here are some tips I found.\u00a0 They&#8217;re a little wacky:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start with a joke. Tell students your goal is to find the lamest joke in the world.\u00a0 <em>(Hmmm&#8230;my joke delivery alone is lame enough.\u00a0 Not sure I can pull this off.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Wear something goofy.\u00a0 Wear a funny hat.\u00a0 Bring a teddy bear.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have a hat <em>(my head is too big &#8211; you know what they say about big heads right?)<\/em>, nor do I have a teddy bear. <em>(I got a monkey)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Randomly select a student and ask them to say what they hate most about the class so far.\u00a0<em> (I don&#8217;t think my ego could take it if they immediately pointed to me)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ll have to continue playing it by ear.\u00a0 So far not too many drops from my class so I can only assume I&#8217;m halfway interesting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;m into my 4th week of lecturing so far for this Art class.\u00a0 How am I doing?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not so sure, in some cases I can see my students responding well and it boosts my confidence, while for some students I&#8217;m having some difficulty breaking through and it just throws me off.
