I don’t know if I’m the only business owner, or graphic designer for that matter, to find it way easier to work in the evenings. Back when I was single, it was a lot easier to spend the morning sleeping in sometimes or working-out, and then my creative juices would kick in right around the time the sun started to set. At nighttime it’s cooler and quieter. It wasn’t uncommon to work up right past dinner and up to about 11pm.
What I’m quickly finding out now that I’m married with child is that it’s just about impossible to do that kind of schedule. If my muse doesn’t hit me during the day while my family is out, it’ll be out of the question to do any work between 3pm – 9pm once I have to start being chauffer to the wife and child.
Now that Kingston is almost 5 months he’s a lot more aware of what’s around him. He looks this way and that now and he clumsily tries to reach for things and ends up hitting his dad in the face. This makes him more fun to play with, but it also gives him a short attention span. If my wife and I aren’t up in his face he’ll turn into the Hulk again.
I TRY to work between these times…I’d sneak away here and there to send out an email or do some project research for a proposal. But sooner or later either my wife comes asking for help killing the latest ant that came crawling in the house, or my boy starts doing his latest Hulk impersonation.
I won’t lie to you, it’s frustrating. I know “Suck it up Raph” everyone will tell me. I knew parenthood won’t be easy. What I’m trying to work out is how to balance parenthood against my own business that’s all. Sometimes I just wonder if it’s easier to find a regular 9 – 5pm job where I can just come home at the end of the day and not have to work up with family time.
I guess I won’t find out for now…I’ve come too far with my business to just give up now.
