Dress to impress
The second tip I’d like to suggest to young designers entering the work force — pay attention to your own personal style. You know that saying “Dress to impress?” It’s TRUE! Â But don’t assume that means suit & tie (or Aloha shirt and slacks here in Hawaii) Look at your competition. See how about 3 out of 4 of them are all wearing the same boring thing that everyone in business community is wearing? They look professional of course…but they look no different from the accountants walking around...

[vimeo id=45878034] This video put together from still images aboard the International Space Station has been going around the Web lately. It certainly IS stunning. Reminds me that the world’s best designer is still Mother Nature herself. (via Knate Myers on Vimeo)

Artist Matthew Olin created these fun superhero profiles using characteristics in various typefaces. Love them! The most distinguishing factor of any font is its characters. Hidden beneath these characters, each typeface also has character—its own unique characteristics. However classified this information may seem, when used correctly, typefaces often speak to us more powerfully than the words that are written with them.

[youtube id=3PG5_bscyE4] A Czech artist, David Cerny has re-modelled a traditional London double-decker bus into a mechanical sculpture of an athlete doing push-ups to celebrate the Olympic Games opening in the British capital on Friday. I think it’s great! Although watching the bus do push-ups reminds me how ironic it is that this bus is getting in shape, while I’m trying my best not to start looking like a bus myself. My child is highly suggestive at 3…and a half. By the way, it’s interesting that half-years are so important when you’re in pre-school. No fair that I don’t use half-years for my age anymore. I digress. I just found it funny that anything he watches these days are typically followed by “I want that!” or “I want to be that!”. It doesn’t help when I tried to introduce him to Scooby Doo the other week on the Cartoon Network it was laden with commercials every 3 minutes. Everything from Barbie...

I stumbled across the site, “The Burning House” this morning which has an interesting premise. You know those conversations you’d have with your friends once in a while, “What would you take right now if your house was on fire?” Well, this site is a collection of personal entries and photos showing what people would take. Scanning down the pages I found it really interesting that cameras & smart phones were common choices. Photos & journals were common too but more so by older people. You know, I’ve...

I found these little paper & wood craft sets over at a local store this past weekend. The sets were from Japan. There’s a website for all the sets. I took a chance…spending $22 for essentially what amounts to just paper & wood wasn’t something I can do all the time. But I figure after my last project with LEGO I wanted something to follow up with the fun I had on that last one. They come in these flat sheet sets. Not all of them equal size. I got one of the more expensive ones only because it looked cool with a lot...

As I’ve been teaching dozens upon dozens of up-and-coming graphic design students through my classes, I’ve been wanting to create an article with tips about the lessons I learned the hard way about this business. Only problem is I can’t seem to get my thoughts in order about my list. One day something inspirational hits me and then I think, “OH this would be an awesome topic to tell my students” and then the next day I’d forget what my thought was. Well, let me try post these ideas up as they come to me and...

If food can be art, then this is about as much inspiration as I can muster up today. Nothing like a good plate of raw fish to make my day. There was a couple of new things I tried tonight (we ate omakase style so it was chef’s choice)…I discovered that I don’t really like raw shrimp and raw squid. They have this sticky texture in the mouth…I would describe it like eating cotton balls soaked up with white glue. Yeah! That’s what it was like!
