Type Games
This has gone around a bit. Kern Type and Shape Type are two sites built entirely in HTML5 allowing the designer and non-designer types alike a peek into the world of Typography. I scored 91 on Kerning and only 75 on Shape. Which was still encouraging because I don’t consider myself that proficient with Type. If you’ve never worked with typography before, I’d give this a few minutes to play around with anyway. It’ll offer you another perspective on how even the tiniest of things effect our design world. I had my art...

I’m tempted to show this video to my class that I’m teaching…we’re about 2 weeks away from doing basic animation. It’s technically “safe for work”, and I think it’s fair to say most of the students in my classes are mature and have a good sense of humor. But all it takes is one bad reaction and then I’m screwed as an instructor… Oh well, at least here I’m safe to be as crude as I like. So have at it. It is SFW BTW. (via BoingBoing)

Gizmodo posted this video today which I found very cool. I’m getting increasingly interested and envious of folks who can do video…an area I have very little experience with. Regardless, it shows some pretty amazing stunts. I’m amazed at how daring some people can be. My days of “x-games” type stunts ended during my intermediate days when my dad thought it was a good idea to make me a skateboard out of roller skate wheels and trucks. Those damn suckers used to grip even the tiniest road gravel and I’d do...
read more10 things every creative person must learn
Photography celebrity Chase Jarvis offered a great artcile “10 things every creative person must learn” today which I though was spot-on. He did a good job of summarizing lessons I had to struggle to learn myself. If you’re a new photographer or designer, I definitely suggest giving this article some thought and putting it to heart. If you want to be the best, seek to be around awesome people–be it other artists, assistants, producers, clients, partners, whatever. Shoot high. Shoot for better than yourself. On a related...
read more16 pixel text size!?
I stumbled across an article today claiming that 16 pixels should be the minimum font size across the web. It’s got some good points worth considering. All this time I’ve been more comfortable using 13 or 14 points as my standard minimum body text. Not quite because of any specific reason beyond “it just feels more comfortable to me”. So it’s a subjective opinion. Looking at this said article in it’s 19pt size is it easy to read? Sure. I’m not a big fan of his type choices but I can’t argue that...

My wife and child return from their Hong Kong trip in a couple hours. I’m pretty excited about it. It’d be good to see them again. Apparently the saying “absence makes the heart grow fonder” rings true. For sure I enjoyed some parts about being alone for a while, but overall I’d say life is better off with them around then not. And that’s a good thing to confirm every once in a while don’t you think? I can’t wait till they’re off the plane for sure. I don’t know why, but ever since I...

I’ve somehow managed to get a hold of the entire series of Uncanny Xmen in digital archive format so I’ve made it a mission to read it through right from the first issue. As it turns out, the early issues of the series was actually pretty difficult to read. The cheese factor and innocence of that era of comic book writing really shows through. Nonetheless, it’s a nice little casual read to pull out whenever I have a nice break. Meanwhile, as it happens I stumbled across this Berlin artist, Anjin Anhut’s vision of what...

It’s been about 5 days since my wife took my little boy with her to Hong Kong to visit his maternal grandparents. I keep getting comments from my friends, “OH you must LOVE it! Some alone time for you!” Yeah no doubt it’s been pretty sweet. I’m not close to hosting a wild party at my place…let’s face it, my party days are long over (I never was a party animal anyway). But I’ve definitely take the advantage of spending my evenings taking small cat naps, catching up with TV, and playing some loud...

So my wife is taking Kingston off to Hong Kong on her own in a few days. This’ll make the first time either one of them have really taken a trip without me. My feelings about this are a bit mixed. Part of me is really jealous that they’re going. I could really use a vacation, despite the fact I know that taking a 2 yr old on a trip isn’t really what could be called a “vacation” in the sense that there isn’t much relaxation to be had. Nonetheless, I’m sure they’ll be eating fantastic food and the...
