Andrea Gnesato
I ran across this nice site by what looks to be an Italian designer, Andrea Gnesato. Very fun layout and my favorite part about it is there’s not one bit of Flash in site. Again, I have nothing against Flash as a medium, but I think when you can accomplish something beautiful using the simplest methods available it impresses me. What I like about this layout is its clever use of space throughout the site. I had an idea similar to this almost 10 years ago…not quite executed as nice as Gnesato’s site, but back then there were...

A friend of mine forwarded me an email link today to this Dutch website. It might be an old chain letter I don’t know. As always I immediately thought it would be a phishing link or something but lo and behold it was nothing but a light joke. It doesn’t take a lot of figure out how this is done. (I found it funny the email commentator said some “great programmer” did this tee hee) But nonetheless a cute little animation and sure enough, it’s getting attention as intended.

Got a link to this article about the “7 Personality Types of Designers Today”. (via WebDesignerDepot) I see a bit of myself in almost every one of these…good stuff, bad stuff, things I’m glad I got over, and things I’d want to be. A little food for thought.

Things have gotten very busy lately….I’m talking both with work and in general life. It’s both good and bad; when there’s no work you stress out over bills, but when there’s too much to do, you stress out over how you’ll manage to get everything done. I don’t know which is better? Of course I’ll take the work. Lately it’s been coming in at a good pace. Now it only seems that I’m more rushed than some of my clients are. They’ll pay me to start, and then I’m sitting here...
read more35 Inspiring Typographic Business Cards
Yet another collection of inspirational ideas I stumbled across today. This one being focused on typography on business cards. There’s a few I kinda like here…especially the letterpress ones I don’t see too many people using them here. I’ve been playing around a few times with UV coat print lately where you have gloss effects printed over non-gloss paper…but seeing as how many people are doing that now on this list, I’m thinking maybe I should try other things. Maybe that’s becoming a cheesy trend? ...

I’ve never been good about bragging about myself. It might be my asian upbringing, or even the fact I grew up here in Hawaii where generally most business people aren’t as aggressive. I remember in my past employer, my manager had to always encourage me to speak out, “you should tell them that you did XXXX and YYYY, you’re good!” she’d say. /shrug. I don’t know. Some days I feel very confident about my design abilities, and some days I feel very small. The reason I bring this up today is that I ran...
read more4.5 tips to being a good web designer
Today I had to do a 10 minute presentation to my business networking chapter. Since a fellow member had suggested I talk about website design today I tried to think of a subject for them that wouldn’t bore them to tears. I could easily talk about HTML code and scripting all day long but I think I’d lose their attention in about 20 seconds. So what I did was come up with some tips I thought were important characteristics in being a good web-designer. I came up with 4.5 points for now…I know, a good number like 5 or 10 tips...
read more8 websites you need to stop building
So a few months back I posted a funny Oatmeal strip about webdesign. Seems like he’s at it again with a pretty funny list of “8 websites you need to stop building”. This is such funny geek humor I feel kinda embarrassed I can relate to all of this. On a side note, I recently replaced a multifunction printer just because the print head didn’t print black anymore. So now what I’m left with is a HUGE hunk of glass and plastic that otherwise still looks in perfect condition and does all the other functions just fine....

I spent the good part of yesterday carting my wife from one dentist to the next because she has a horrible toothache. Enough so it keeps her awake all night. You know, I want her to get better simply because I’ve had toothaches before and I know they’re NOT fun at all. They make you want to yank all your teeth out so you can feel some relief. At the same time, I want her to get better simply so I can decompress as well. Being the spouse of a woman in pain is muy dificil (2 years of high school Spanish that’s one of only 2...

Stumbled across this site recently which lists some pretty fun jQuery tutorials including some of the tricks I see a lot on some of the trendier sites out there. It’s definitely got me inspired with a couple of these techniques. Continuing on this discussion floating around on the Web these days…jQuery (Javascript) has long been an alternative way to accomplish neat web tricks without having to resort to Flash. It’s just that for a while now, some of the more graphic related tricks have been hard to accomplish with...
