Too old to rock n roll

Posted by on Oct 21, 2008 in Personal | 0 comments

Today a client friend of mine told me, “you’re too old to rock n roll” He said this after I explained to him that I have some hearing problems this past week because I must have pushed some extra crap into my ear with all the ear plugs I’ve been wearing at my band shows.  Gross yeah?  I’m going to see the doctor today to flush my head out. As a result, I’ve been a crabby old man. Seriously, now I understand why some of the elderly can be crabby. I can only hear out of one ear so I’m talking extra loud...

Hypnotic Gadgets

Posted by on Oct 21, 2008 in Art, Cool Design Tech, Design Finds | 0 comments

Gizmodo had this great collection of “Hypnotic Gadgets” on their site yesterday. Pretty amazing stuff. I’m resisting the urge to launch into another “why can’t we have cool stuff like this in Hawaii” tirade. Think about this though, with all the talk our local politicians have about how we’re so IT friendly and how we’re fostering art in Downtown, they’re still cutting education funding and we don’t even have a real museum in site.  (Bishop?  Meh, no disrespect but that’s...

Return of the wife

Posted by on Oct 17, 2008 in Personal | 0 comments

So the wifey gets back on Monday.  Honestly, as cheesy as it sounds, it’ll be great to see her. It was only 19 days but it sure sucked anyway.  We used to spend up to 3 months apart between visits when we were dating, so I didn’t expect it to affect me as much. But it did.  No I didn’t spend my nights crying like a panty.  But sitting alone at nights watching crappy TV eating microwave burritos gets old really fast. Yeah, “learn to cook Raph” is what I keep reminding myself. I’ll put it on my bucket list....

La la la, connect the dots

Posted by on Oct 16, 2008 in Design Finds | 0 comments

I’ve always had a thing for tats.  I was once in a long waiting list to get a tat sleeve done by one of the best tattoo artists in town but had to cancel last minute to trade off for getting a plane ticket to see my wife.  Unfortunately, our economy is in such a crapper these days I’m much more inclined to hoard my money now rather then to spend it for body art. Anyway, I thought this particular connect-the-dots tat was pretty funny and creative. This isn’t the first connect-the-dot tat I’ve seen though. I think...

Live Portraits

Posted by on Oct 14, 2008 in Art, Cool Design Tech, Design Finds | 0 comments

Here’s another exhibit that’s pretty cool.  It’s an installation art piece called CUBE that uses tech to generate “portraits” on the fly. In other words, the CUBE is designed to collect thousands of live video snippets and then make its own decisions on how it would display it on the screens. It’s like live portraits. It’s designed by a guy named Lincoln Schatz.  His site shows an example of it. Neat!  This is actually apropos because I set my students out to do some portrait art in this latest...

Gig Posters

Here are some cool gig posters that were collected by WellMedicated. Gig posters are always fun to collect. Unfortunately here in Hawaii I don’t see too many opportunities to collect them. Back in the day when I used to work for Hungry Ear Music, this little used music store in town, we used to have opportunities to collect some cool promotional material.  Today, all I see around are usually just small little event postcards.

Tower of Power

OK, my hypothesis is somewhat vindicated…. we’re not the only country that does amazingly pointless activities, costing a heck of a lot of money & resources, qualifying for the “Why-Do-They-Hate-Us” list. Apparently Vienna people have a lot of time on their hands as well.  A Guiness World Record was broken with this 96.73 feet Lego Tower. Alright alright, it was “for the kids”   Mmmm hmmm. Music Schedule

Here’s a concept I quickly whipped up for my band “Miss Buddha”. I’m not sure.  I was pretty excited about it at first.  I liked the spirit of it…it’s very Sex Pistol-esk.  I intentionally did it very fast and furious to try to get the energy of the music we played. And I noticed a lot of the iconic punk groups always have very chaotic, almost cheap looking logos.  With the exception of the Dead Milkmen who have a dead cow.  I wanted this cheesy 80’s vibe to it too so I did the halftone color thing to...

Meat Pies WTF

Posted by on Oct 3, 2008 in Personal | 0 comments

My brother’s got his own blog he’s been keeping since he moved to Australia earlier this year. That little squirt is even more irreverent then I am, which makes him pretty damn funny sometimes. Here he’s got some snapshots of some food items Downunder that brings back some memories of the year I spent in Australia when I was about 8 years old.  I loved these meat-pies and sausage rolls.  Someone outta package these things and bring them down to the States.  They’re not fine cuisine or anything but they’re at...

Honozooloo

I found a local artist/designer this time around with pretty creative indoor event photography skillz over at Honozooloo. Pretty nice work with the DJ and live band photography.  Check out his design section as well where he demonstrates pretty creative shots of our common Honolulu scenery.
