Random goodness

Here are just a few random things to watch out for. Looks like a couple of events that was mentioned to me.  AIGA has what looks to be a design exhibition coming up soon called Constants Variables from October 6 – 17, 2008.  While also on the 24th of September they have a free presentation about….err…paper.  Yeah doesn’t sound very exciting, but I know I gotta learn a little more about paper stock myself.  I gotta open up my repertoire instead of sticking to the same paper over and over. There’s also a free event...

Birthday Dilemma

Posted by on Sep 16, 2008 in Personal | 0 comments

So it’s my wife’s birthday in a few days on the 22nd. I’m at a loss of what to get her.  STILL?!   Yup.  Hey it wasn’t like I wasn’t watching out…for the past couple months I had been trying to pay attention to anything she’s been interested at to see if I can get a hint of what she wants. She’s kinda like my dad…impossible to get anything for them. I’ve gotten her jewelry before.  You know, like a hella expensive wedding ring, some nice pendants and bracelets. She always seems to...

Gigantorrific

Posted by on Sep 16, 2008 in Art | 0 comments

This cool watercolor is actually quite good timing. I have one student who’s working on an illustration where there’s a gigantic chocolate monster chasing after some runaway fruit.  I know, a little bizarre subject matter but it’s fun for the class. Anyway we were talking yesterday about how this creature could be made to look ginormous.  (My new created word of the day)  I suggested he try to use scale to show relative sizes of the objects…put his monster next to tiny trees and stuff so that the viewer can picture how...

OkayDave

A friend of mine pointed me towards this DC-area designer named Dave Werner. Told me to check out the site. I thought it was pretty cool. I especially love it when other designers show their process…they show you how they came up with their ideas, their sketches, their problems, their final results, etc. I think he did a good job of presenting that here. I think he’s a talented artist. I’m not a big fan of Flash sites myself.  My old site was hard to put together & a pain in the ass to maintain. I kinda turned a 180 on...

4 weeks in…

Posted by on Sep 15, 2008 in My Business Adventures, Personal | 2 comments

So I’m into my 4th week of lecturing so far for this Art class.  How am I doing?  I’m not so sure, in some cases I can see my students responding well and it boosts my confidence, while for some students I’m having some difficulty breaking through and it just throws me off. I’m certainly learning some things so far though, like: Students will see through your bullshit. If you don’t know something, I think it’s better to say you “don’t know” rather then pretend like you do. Morning is a...

Creative Type

Stumbled across this designer’s work recently, David Foster. Here he used typography to communicate a different demographic. I admire guys who can just primarily use type alone and yet get the message across so creatively. I’m working on the skill myself all the time but I see stuff all the time where I’m telling myself, “Damn I wish I thought of that!” It takes a lot of patience to work through type…once you’ve collected all kinds of fonts you can sit there for hours trying to find the right thing. ...

Tough Love

I found this logo pretty clever. I think it sums up the name of the record label. I found this via BOOOM! mentioning the clever work of this young designer Alex Ostrowski.  His work is very creative I like it.  Check out his “Note to Self” collection…I wouldn’t mind having one of these books myself.  I used to stick reminders on my own office walls as well. I could have used some of these motivational messages. He’s got some cool album work.  Makes me think I should get my arse in gear and design more stuff for...

Cool paint

So I had some recent experience painting our new condo right?  I got “wild” with my office. When I say “wild” it’s just merlot color. Whoopdeedoo. No I didn’t paint polkadots or graffiti art on my walls. But when I bought that purple can of paint at the store I figured either it was going to be a hit or I just made a big mistake and my wife was going to kill me. It turned out very nice actually and is my favorite part of my place. But our bedroom isn’t as spectacular. We used a color my wife calls...

Twisted pencil art

Posted by on Sep 8, 2008 in Art, Design Finds | 0 comments

Great sketch work found on Life Without Taffy.  A little twisted. I see the same thing happening in my class. Some students are drawing very cutesy stuff. While a couple of them have drawn characters mauling things. I’m cool with that so long as they don’t illustrate any characters mauling their instructors.

Potty Mouth

I can be pretty raunchy with language sometimes can’t I?  Once in a while I say “Fuck this…” and “Humping that….” Shame on me!  I’m going to try not to do it too much but just humor me once in a while ok? No, I don’t typically utter expletives like a sailor. But every once in a while I just let it go. I decided at some point back that my own blog would be as real as I could make it. A colleague of mine at the college was giving me lesson plans for the class one day and she just naturally...
