So I brought Kingston to a playgroup today. Easter Seals offered us as a weekly opportunity for him to get some social interaction before he starts preschool. It turned out pretty cool. I got to see how my kid handles himself around others his age…will he be a pushover, a loner, a bully?

Turns out he wasn’t so bad. He initially didn’t know how to react. Ended up on his back spread eagle in on the floor when we first walked in but it took him about 30 seconds to get up and do a beeline towards the nearest box of cars and trucks. The other 3 or 4 kids in the room were around his age so I couldn’t help but try to compare to see how King stacked up against them.

I found him to be pretty well-rounded…not doing some of the negative things I witnessed in the other kids. He didn’t cling to me (good); he didn’t hide away from everyone else (good); he didn’t let others push him over when he wanted something (good).

On the flip side, he didn’t concentrate too well on some of the activities offered. When they started doing group song time, he was like, “oh fuck that” and did a beeline to the nearest crayons. (OK he wasn’t quite as crude as his pops; but I could imagine that was what he was saying).

I may not have paid too much attention to Easter Seals in the past, but I’m ever so thankful such programs exist now.
